ESOL

At LCT, we offer ESOL and literacy courses to speakers of other languages and native speakers of English respectively from entry level to level 2 with a view to building their confidence, improving their language skills and preparing them for progression to work and further education or higher education.

We also prepare learners for IELTS tests. There is strong emphasis on speaking and listening, reading ad writing as well grammar and vocabulary. The core curriculum is used to inform planning and delivery of sessions.

How we assess learners’ needs

All learners undertake a comprehensive induction, screening, initial and diagnostic assessments with a view to placing them at the right level as well as determining their support needs. The induction period is also used to identify vocational and learning styles and employability barriers.

Teaching and learning

Our lecturers are highly qualified ranging from L3 to L5 in relevant disciplines. Most of them are holders of BA, PGCE, MA, TEFL/TESOL and PhD. A wide range of resources and strategies are used to deliver ESOL and literacy sessions to ensure the lesson are interactive and motivating. Lessons are contextualised to meet learner’s needs. We embed citizenship and vocational elements in our ESOL curriculum to encourage integration and employability. We use computers to make teaching and learning interesting.

Assessment and accreditation

Our courses are accredited by Trinity College London. Learners are assessed internally by a team of experienced assessors, which followed by a robust internal verification. External verification is done by the awarding body before certificates are issued to candidates.
